The ABC’s of Tattoo

More than a decade ago, Los Angeles County adopted a rating system for restaurants in which health inspectors, after finishing their inspection, made their important decision as to what letter to hand out.  The letters A, B and C quickly became the norm, with A being the best and C being the worst.  Whatever letter the inspected restaurant was given was determined by calculating the manner in which the restaurant lived up to health and sanitation regulations in their kitchens.  Naturally there are standards – that is, any restaurant that fails its health inspection isn’t simply given a C and told to shape up.  C is the bottom of the barrel in terms of health department score, but it’s still passable in terms of staying in business.  Regardless, if you had the choice to eat your next meal at one of three restaurants, one with an A displayed in their front window, one with a B and one with a C, which one would you choose?  I sure as hell know which one I would choose. Though this system might seem overly strict to some, the vast majority of LA County residents like it a lot.  It’s also gained in popularity over on the east coast, where New York City restaurants began adopting it this past July. Now then, tattoos may seem to be on a completely different level than food and restaurants, but when you really think about it, they aren’t so different at all.  No matter which way you slice it, at the heart of either issue the most important thing is a sanitary environment in which clean preparation and execution are performed.  Health, safety and quality are at the forefront of what matters to a costumer as well as what should definitely matter to an artist.  This being the case, the state of Georgia’s Columbia County is currently considering a policy in which a grading system that is more or less based on the LA County and NYC restaurant models is used. The idea is causing a great deal of debate amongst health officials and tattoo artists alike.  Some tattoo artists embrace it wholeheartedly, while others complain that it will simply create more paperwork.  If you ask me – and no one did, but when has that ever stopped me? – this is an excellent idea.  Like it or not, the tattoo industry, just like any other industry, is about keeping up.  If a tattoo studio or an artist can’t put forth the effort and prove the quality of their establishment when it counts, then I don’t feel sorry for them.  A rating system is something that should be implemented everywhere for all tattoo studios.  I mean, think about how much easier it makes it for first time tattoo costumers, who may not know much about tattoos but want to go somewhere that offers quality work and professional care.  It’s a great concept and one that I really hope to see a lot of in the future. Meet Boff Konkerz!

Some people just like to take their time.  In the tattoo world of Boff Konkerz, the journey is just as important as the destination.  And he knows it.  Tattoo machines might be the norm with most tattooists, but give Boff a needle lashed to a stick and a little bit of black ink and he will commit himself to hand poking some of the most intricate and beautiful looking work that I’ve ever seen. These are tattoos that take a great deal of time and patience – not just for the artist, but for the client as well.  It’s important to Konkerz to take his time, a characteristic that highlights the devotion he feels as an artist toward the work he does.  Yet another side of this devoted belief in precision and care was Boff’s road to actually becoming a tattoo artist. For 15 years prior to ever tattooing anyone, Boff simply designed tattoos for friends.  He was, in his own way growing and maturing as an artist before the decision came to actually get into the industry as someone who tattooed people – and who tattooed them without a machine.  It was his friend and “World’s Most Tattooed Person”, Lucky Diamond Rich who showed Boff how to build a hand tool and then proceeded to allow Boff to tattoo him.  It was the first time that he had ever tattooed anyone and after that, he quickly became hooked.  Boff tattooed himself numerous times and when friends saw these tattoos, they instantly wanted him to tattoo them. These days Boff Konkerz can be found at London’s Divine Canvas Bespoke Tattooing.  You can see Boff’s online portfolio by heading here .  Like I said, the work is beautiful and if you like to take things slow and love the look of art done by a different set of rules, then I would definitely suggest seeking out the talents of Boff Konkerz. Meet Leigh Oldcorn!

I like Leigh Oldcorn.  It doesn’t take long to like him, either.  His work is characterized by a lot of black and grey, which is filled with a variety of influences from other tattoo genres.  It might sound odd, but is was something about the way that Oldcorn tattoos roses that really got me to take a deeper look at his work.  To put into words exactly what it is about Oldcorn’s roses that I like so much probably won’t do any justice to the work.  I think that all I can say is that the work completely nailed my attention.  Does any more need to be said?  If you’re doing the sort of work that immediately gets people’s attention and makes them want to see more of what you can do, then I’d say there isn’t much more you can ask for.  You’re doing everything that you need to be doing as a tattooist. Which is why Leigh Oldcorn’s stuff is so good: it is unpretentious.  It is subtle.  And it is the end result of much hard work, dedication and due paying.  Leigh Oldcorn knows the value of hard work and the importance of being available for his clientele.  Perhaps most importantly, he remains humbled by the success that he has seen and recognizes that the people he work for matter.  That sort of humility can’t help but form a mutual trust and respect between tattooist and client, which I feel is essential to anyone’s tattoo experience. “Ooooh, I have lots of them, yeah I have lots of ideal customers. My actual customers. I am not joking it’s a compliment that they choose me to do their work, that they spend an hour or two in my shop. They could go anywhere else but they don’t, they choose our shop and a lot of them will say ‘do what you want’, and that’s a compliment. When you get given a theme and can do what you want. Those are good customers, the ones that let you do what you want and trust you to do it well.” Leigh Oldcorn has been tattooing since the 80’s.  In other words, he’s been tattooing longer than some of you reading this have been on this earth.  His struggle to get to where he is today as owner of Cosmic Tattoo in Colchester, England has been a lengthy one that more or less began when he dropped out of school at age 16.  Oldcorn began sketching and showing his work to various tattoo studios in the hopes of any kind of job.  He eventually settled in at a shop just basically helping the tattoo artist around the shop, cleaning, etc, and little by little he began to build the knowledge needed to strike out on his own.  It wasn’t until 1998 and many jobs at many different tattoo shops that Leigh Oldcorn finally managed to set up his very own studio.  That studio is Cosmic Tattoo. “Why is it that all these tattooists are bitching and moaning these days? I read that tattooists are whinging, saying ‘I am booked 3 months in advance, I’m a slave to my shop,’ It’s like mate, you are on at least 50 quid an hour yeah, you get to draw on people and it’s not exactly a hard life. It’s not like working at McDonalds taking shit all day so stop whinging and just enjoy it. Rejoice and think ‘thank God I have the privilege to do what I do.’” How can you not love this guy? Meet Amanda Ruby!

Given that I regularly profile so many different tattoo artists here on the Tattoo Blog, I just realized today – and found it quite surprising, actually – that I can’t remember the last time (if ever) that I’ve done a profile on an artist who more or less sticks to black and grey.  To me, black and grey tattoo work is like black and white photography – it enriches the image and gives it a whole other worldly and highly unique texture.  Naturally this only occurs when the art is done well, which is why a good artist becomes all the more memorable when they clearly have a strong command of the black and grey tattoo. Amanda Ruby has not been tattooing for long.  In fact, throughout the years while many tattooists were honing their skills in apprenticeships or as lowly scratchers in dingy basements, Ruby was working in advertising, her art typically gracing brochures and covers.  She spent the first 21 years of her life in Zimbabwe before finally deciding to move to England.  After bouncing from job to job for a while and really not finding the enjoyment from her art that all artists naturally crave, she ended up in Folkestone, working a rather unexpected apprenticeship at Squid Ink.  Within 3 months of this apprenticeship, Amanda did her first portrait and the rest, as they say, is history.  That was 2 and a half years ago.  Not long ago at all and certainly not a long time to be tattooing for. Regardless of the short length of time that Amanda Ruby has been tattooing for, her black and grey work is really nice stuff.  In her own words, Amanda likes to mix pattern work with realism – a style she feels is genuinely her own and one which she hopes to continue to improve upon.  She works with a constant eye on what can be improved, what works and what doesn’t and always seems to be thinking ahead in terms of getting better as a tattoo artist and providing the best work possible for her clients.   Check out some of Amanda’s wonderful black and grey work and consider popping into Squid Ink if you’re ever in the Folkestone, Kent, England neck of the woods! Gimmick Ink

New gimmicks are popping up daily and the world of tattoo certainly is no stranger to them.  Is this a good thing or a bad thing?  It’s hard to say.  One would think that tattoos are relatively safe from gimmicky gimmick type stuff (did I just say “gimmicky gimmick”?  I did.), given the very nature of tattoos being so permanent and all that stuff.  It would seem kind of difficult to throw gimmicks into something that basically is what it is in the way that a tattoo is what it is.  Still, it happens. The latest gimmick to hit the tattoo scene are the augmented reality codes.  Augmented reality codes are the little black boxes that can be found on everything from baseball cards to magazines to clothing.  What happens is that you hold the image of the little black augmented reality box up to your webcam and this image then passes through all those tubes and chutes that make up the internet to bring you additional content.  It’s sort of like bonus features on a DVD. Taking its cue from this sort of technology, Argentinian company ThinkAnApp is the first to create an Augmented Reality tattoo.   From what I can see it’s a very basic attempt , but basically the company recruited a volunteer to be tattooed with an AR design.  When this tattoo, which looks like a black picture frame is placed in front of a computer webcam on a computer that is running the ThinkAnApp software, an animated 3D dragon appears (on the monitor, of course) and floats around the perimeters of the tattoo.  If this sounds kind of cheesy to you, that’s probably because it is.  But if it also sounds kind of cool to you and that maybe this sort of technology will be refined in the not so distant future, well you could also be right. Yes it’s gimmicky and it’s a little bit impractical, but hey, that doesn’t mean that if it becomes a perfected art form that it won’t totally take off.  Considering the revival that 3D is currently having in Hollywood and with companies like Sony selling 3D flatscreen TV’s, it certainly can’t be much longer before people are lining up to get their very own custom made augmented reality tattoo.
