No doubt about it, tattoos have the ability to deliver very political messages.  This has always been the case and it certainly will always remain the same.  Recently in Turkey however, a specific political tattoo has really grown in popularity with those who oppose the current direction that the Turkish government seems to be heading. According to this article , people all over Turkey are visiting Tattoo studios, many of whom don’t particularly like tattoos, simply to show their support for a growing movement that wishes to keep church and state separate.  As a matter of fact, sixty-percent of the people who come into Instanbul’s Inkstanbul Tattoo shop (gotta love that name), have no other tattoos. What do all these people want tattooed on their bodies and why?  Nothing more than the signature of Turkish politician Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, tattooed as “K. Ataturk”.  Ataturk was the founder of the secular Turkish state and a well respected innovator in terms of Turkey adopting more of a European approach to everyday life.  Today many feel that the secular way of life is in danger of being edged out in favour of a more Islamic republic. “The Justice and Development party (AKP), the current ruling party in Turkey has its roots in political Islam, and has exacerbated fears among opposition secular members that the party holds long-term plans to transform the country from its secular establishment to an Islamic republic. “Just like it happened in Iran,” Arti said. “They got rid of the shah and it became more religious and conservative. AKP is trying to do the same in Turkey.” The increased frequency of young Turks asking tattoo parlors for Ataturk’s signature, “K.Ataturk”, tattooed on their bodies comes as a reaction to the upcoming June constitution referendum in Turkey. ” Though I don’t know a lot about this situation in Turkey, I find it really interesting that people are willing to tattoo themselves in opposition to a melding of church and state.  I know that in my own country people would never commit such a dedicated move to express their beliefs.  Not only that, but I’ve seen many different forms of protest in my life, but I’ve never seen something like this.  Good luck to them and their cause. The Bride

New Haven Connecticut’s Joe Capobianco is well known to the tattoo world for his spacey/scary/creepy portraits of crazy space girls.  I think that’s the best way that I can describe it.  No offense intended, Joe.  Joe has been tattooing for longer than you, and he does really, really, really cool work. In fact, Joe Capobianco’s tattoo art reminds me of these little figurine sort of dolls of various manga comic book characters that you can buy all over the place in Japan.  I’m not kidding, they’re crazy popular over there.  But hey!  What a coincidence that I would think of those little figurines that you see all over the place in Japan when I see Joe Capobianco’s tattoos!  Why?  Well, because Joe Capobianco has recently designed one of those little figurines that you see all over the place in Japan! That’s right, if you’re a fan of Capobianco’s work and you can’t one way or another get to Joe, or you don’t have the money to get a tattoo or whatever the case may be that prohibits you from getting Joe’s art on your body, then you can order one of the limited edition toy figurines, named The Bride.  It’s pretty cool looking actually, and if I had an inch of space in my tiny-ass apartment, I’d probably even buy one.  At any rate, if you’re interested in buying one of these beauties, they’ll run you a cool $75 USD.  You can find them here, at Kidrobot.com .  You can’t however, buy one until May 20th. If you do happen to live in Columbus Ohio, you can pick one up at the Hell City Tattoo Festival on May 21st, where Capobianco and crew will be on hand for what I’m sure will be a decent release party. All Hail…the King?

When I think of the ultimate place to hang out and get a tattoo, well…I don’t, really.  I mean I’ve never actually thought about a place that could be a hybrid between nightclub and tattoo studio.  I don’t really need all the bells and whistles just to get a tattoo, I just need a good clean place, with at least one really good tattoo artist.  Seems like a pretty basic concept to me. However, that all might be starting to change.  Tattoo artist Mario Barth is all set to open his brand spanking new King Ink at the Mirage in Las Vegas, Nevada this weekend.  King Ink is in many ways, the ultimate height of all the commodification and trendiness of the tattoo world.  Yet at the same time, it’s a lot of people’s dream come true, mixing tattoos, music, booze, partying and faux alligator skin. With three different rooms to be tattooed in, live video feeds throughout the club of those three tattoo rooms, crystal chandeliers, frescoes of tattoos that Barth has done within the past 30 years and a patio all done up in the style of a castle infused with Austrian baroque, one might be tempted to refer to King Ink as King Tacky instead.  However, aside from the superficialities of the place, according to Barth there is also some depth, some insight into the world of tattoo: “We invented a new program that is called the Tattoo Explorer, which is linked in a worldwide database of designs,” Barth says. “So you can basically go in and say, ‘I would like to have say an ankh,’ and it pulls up the ankh and it shows you the different styles of it, but it also explains what it means, what’s the meaning, where has it been done the first item, who was wearing it, when was it historically bad to have an ankh, when was it great. All those elements have been implemented.” Barth adds the interactive and education elements continue with televisions displaying live footage of tattoos currently being done in the three tattoo rooms at King Ink, a complete history of tattooing timeline is part of the bar and tables becoming shadowboxes displaying tattoo machinery and tools from around the world. Still, if you ask me, the idea of getting tattooed at a place where people are getting wasted off shots that are so potent that they don’t even have a name doesn’t really sound all that appealing.  Although, Barth insists that all his tattoo artists are skilled in determining who’s ready to be tattooed and who isn’t.  Okay fine.  I guess it all boils down to different strokes for different folks and that’s also what the entire art form of tattoo is about.  So while all this seems full blown and way, way, way over the top for me, others will undoubtedly come along and love it.  And that in itself is cool enough. Why Get an Ankle Butterfly Tattoo?

Why an Ankle Butterfly Tattoo? Ankle is one of those places which seem gorgeous and attractive. As butterflies are feminine, they can be one of the greatest tattoos on the ankle. The ankle can be flash and secreted when needed. If your workplace prohibits tattoos, you can put on boots to hide them. In the same way and you can appear off your tattoo throughout party or gathering. Butterfly carries important meaning – symbolizing alteration, change, and independence. Furthermore, they are a great thinking for a tattoo, because you can opt your favorite’s colors and they give a set of scope for creativity. Designs for Ankle Butterfly Tattoo: The butterflies can have dazzling colors such as violet, yellow, blue, red and their combination. If you have a desired color, you can certainly get your butterfly with those. The butterfly can be displayed as hovering over flowers or leaves. In this way, you can consist a background of flowers, leaves or other designs. Black colored butterflies are also well-liked. Black butterfly designs with curved lines seem gorgeous. Some other thinking for the butterfly tattoo is to have butterflies, around the ankle giving the seem of an anklet. Multiple butterflies around the ankle form an anklet seem superior. Before acquiring a butterfly tattoo, you can go through the pictures of actual butterflies to opt the one you like the most. So get a butterfly tattoo and get fashionable.

A Brides Special Day

I give a lot of credit to the brides that decide to break tradition and have their special day their way.  Letting their body art be on display for all the friends and relatives that show up to celebrate their special day.  It’s about time.  Why not wear and look the way you feel most comfortable?  Wear those sneakers if that’s your desire. Tattooed Bride has some nice ideas if you’re planning your own wedding and your desire is to be a little over the top.  It goes beyond just showing some tattoos off.  The grooms, the wedding party – the pictures tell a tale of weddings from shots of the wedding party getting ready to some nice professional shots featuring the couples.   These weddings can be fun for the guests too.  Remember the days when you got invited to a wedding and your first thought is – dull, predictable and boring.  You knew the routine by heart.  The biggest surprise would be the color of the bridesmaid’s gowns.  Now going to a wedding can mean anything goes.  Unpredictable and unconventional is the name of the game. Deeper Ink

It’s funny how a little bit of curiosity can go such a long way.  I never ask people what their tattoos mean to them.  I may be thinking it, but it’s always seemed to me to be a rather personal question.  I’ve told people that I like their tattoo or tattoos and I’ve asked people where they got the work done and who the artist was, but when it comes to getting right down to brass tacks and asking about the meaning, I always stop short.  After reading this article about photographer Marianne Bernstein, I may have to rethink my policy on talking to people about their tattoos. Bernstein, 53, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, made the decision one day to talk to a homeless girl who was sitting on the street.  Bernstein asked the girl if she would mind having her photo taken, and also if the girl would write down on a piece of paper what her knuckle tattoo “Lost Girl” meant to her.  The end result became the catalyst for Bernstein’s new book Tatted . Tatted is the culmination of a vast amount of curiosity and care.  Within its pages, is a collection of people’s tattoos – a photo and a page written by the photographed person on what their tattoo means to them.  There are almost 100 such photos and written statements.  What Bernstein found while working on Tatted was that tattoos aided her in finding out so much more about the people she photographed. “People are so much more interesting when you look closely.  How many times do you walk by somebody like that and wonder what their story is? It was a chance to connect with somebody.” It took Bernstein a year to complete Tatted, walking Philadelphia’s South Street and finding people whose tattoos caught her eye.  The book was then published by Brian Jacobson and Nathan Purcell of GritCityInc. At an opening party earlier this month at Pure Gold Gallery at the Piazza at Schmidt’s, almost 150 of Bernstein’s images and accompanying handwritten descriptions were on display and for sale. Jacobson said there was something nice about seeing some of his more straitlaced family and friends from out of town mingling with the city’s tattoo culture. “They hold a common misconception that people with tattoos are different,” Jacobson said. “Being there with people covered in tattoos and seeing the images on the walls, I think it surprised them to see that the only difference is these people literally put their emotions on their bodies. I hope it changed their perception of tattoos.” I think what’s possibly the most interesting thing about Marianne Bernstein and her book is that Bernstein herself doesn’t currently have any tattoos.  For someone outside the tattoo culture to look so deeply into it and to learn so much from it is a really special thing.  If more people took the time and care that Marianne Bernstein has taken in amassing Tatted, then maybe we would all be a tiny step closer to understanding one another; tattooed or not. Roman Abramovich & Girlfriend Make New Year’s Eve Plans

Rich boys do get everything. Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich included. What makes us so? Well, so many things but it is actually his grand New Year plans that took our notice this time. According to the London Times, he is planning a real feat with girlfriend Daria Zhukova on St Barts For New Year’s Eve. This is going to be a beach party that will invite 250 people. The entertainment bracket will bring a performance by Prince, a treat that cost the host £500,000. We are told that Abramovich bought a home for $89 million on the island recently. In fact, he even plans to use the entire Governor Bay area as a party space for his guests who would be arriving in luxury yachts. One can also expect a lot of fireworks (no pun included) along his own massive boats. The outdoor extravaganza will also include a swimming pool and an outdoor cinema. A li’l birdie tells us that Abramovich is spending £3 million for this affair. The guest list has been kept a secret but speculation is that Jude Law and Simon Cowell are among the people invited. Well, only time can tell fo if you remember how Abramovich canceled his Aspen New Year Eve bash last year! Via timesonline
