Papa Heller is not a new comer to tattoos but he is not very well known in the United States. He hails from the Czech Republic but has been a tattoo artist practicing his trade in New Zealand for over ten years now. He’s also lived in the UK and has traveled to Australia and the Middle East. There was an extensive and thorough interview with him in my late st issue of International Tattoo Art. He studied under an American who owned a shop in Prague. He says he’s been shooting for more realism and says he’s relying more on references to help with achieving this. He’s also been trying to incorporate more color into his work. He has a way of using his backgrounds – whether it’s a drop shadow or a blue sky to cause his artwork to jump off the skin. I really like the way the tail end of this shark looks like it’s coming around the corner of the guy’s torso. You can see much more of his work by visiting his Myspace page . Hey, not to generalize, but tattoo artists can certainly behave as a responsible and progressive lot. Sure there’s crummy tattoo artists out there who aren’t really doing anything for anyone other than a few crummy flash tattoos now and then, but hey, that’s a very minor percentage of the artists out there. In truth, tattoo artists are continuously working to push the boundaries in everything from their art to the methods in which their art is portrayed and displayed. Enter the Rites of Passage Tattoo and Arts Convention , taking place this 2011 from the 28th to the 30th of January. What truly separates ROP from other tattoo conventions is the method and intent of the entire gathering. Rites of Passage isn’t just about seeing phenomenal tattooists under one roof and hanging out. I mean, it is about that but it’s also about so much more. “The Rites of Passage Festival aims to take you on a journey to lands forgotten and cultures undiscovered to re-explore the real reason people get tattooed in both the modern and ancient world. In doing so, it celebrates not only the creative energy that links us to ourselves and each other as a modern tribe – it enables us to explore how we can reconnect with our natural environment in the same respectful ways as our ancestors, and re-establish the balance our Earth needs for its survival while we go about living our modern lives.” In layman’s terms, this is a festival and not just a tattoo convention. It intends to create a dynamic between the natural environment, artists and the people who appreciate tattoo art. There will be music, public speakers, various types of performers as well as visual artists. The best part about the entire festival however, is that it’s doing its best to ensure that the entire event is 100% organic. By that they mean that the festival will showcase as many organic and eco-friendly products that they can. Organic produce, eco-friendly tattoo products, recycled goods, it’s all going to be a major part of what Rites of Passage is all about. Plus, in addition to all the great stuff that will be found at the festival, it’s nice to know that 100% of the profits from Rites of Passage will go toward buying agricultural land which will then be replanted with virgin rainforest. Not bad at all, right? Oh yeah, one last thing that I forgot to mention: the entire festival takes place in Melbourne, Australia, which means that come January you’ll most likely be itching to get out of the winter weather and hit the gorgeous summer weather that Australia is known for. Plus, Nick Baxter is going to be there – I mean…do you really need any more of a reason to go??? Nowadays we conversation approximately body Painting, because just a pair of days past there was in Australia in Queensland, the festival where you meet an annual world-famous artists. A small ‘ how to use the graffiti spray cans and some brush, their canvas is not the walls, but the body people who are dressed and processed merely by color. This year there have been works crazy, I see a option in the picture gallery. Are used both acrylics and Henna which we know to be a perfectly natural element. Not that it matters whether there’s a male or female hand behind the tattoo machine at any given time, but it’s a fact that some of the greatest tattoo artists currently working in the tattoo universe are female. Seeing a woman working as a tattoo artist is totally commonplace in various cities and countries around the world. Japan however, is not one of those places. Laden with a reputation for an outdated and all around negative attitude toward the tattooed and tattoo artist in general, checking out the work of a female tattoo artist in Japan is not nearly as easy as it is over here in the Americas. So when I found out that there was an astoundingly good, female tattoo artist from Japan who still practiced the Japanese traditional tattooing of Tebori, I kind of rushed to see what exactly Horiren had to offer. And…wow, I mean, just… wow. Oddly enough, unlike most tattoo artists, Horiren made her way into the Japanese tattoo world by practice, study and of course, talent – and not by apprenticing, at any point. She worked as an illustrator for many years before actually setting off to pursue work as a tattoo artist. It was during a trip to Australia that she had her first tattoos done, and because she was paying to have what was basically tattoo flash done, she began to consider what it would be like if she designed her own tattoos. Then, through a process that involved reading American Tattoo magazines, studying photos of Yakuza member’s tattoos in a particular Yakuza journal and of course, actually practicing on herself and friends, Horiren learned her art form. For the first 8 years of her career as a tattoo artist, Horiren focused on doing small tattoos. Five years ago, she changed things up a bit and began doing tremendous full back pieces. Unsurprisingly, her skill level could well handle such a transition. Though she works primarily in the Tebori style, sometimes Horiren will use a tattoo machine, but only if the person she is doing the tattoo on is short of time or if she had previously begun a tattoo with a tattoo machine. To get an appointment with her for a tattoo, meet someone who knows her. – Hey, that’s one more reason to visit Japan! Meet Horiren!
Damn you Australians, you lucky bastards. As I sit here with the heat in my apartment cranked up and the sound of the icy rain smacking against my windows, all I can think about is being some place warm and fun. Some place tropical, some place where I can surf and maybe even pick up a new tattoo along the way. Wouldn’t you know it, Australians happen to be in the middle of summer right now. And wouldn’t you also know it, but the folks on the Gold Coast, aka Australia’s #1 tourist destination, have decided to put a little something together for those of us who happen to like awesome tropical weather, perfect beaches and oh yeah, I almost forgot: tattoos. It’s called Surf n’ Ink 2010, and it’s Australia’s answer to complete and utter awesomeness. This has got to be one of the sweetest tattoo conventions in the world. I mean, just check this out: “Our venue, the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre overlooks the canal from its spacious balcony and is metres away from 70 kilometres of pristine white sandy beaches. The Gold Coast is Australia’s #1 vacation destination and holds an abundance of nightlife, shopping, restaurants and with 35ºC (95F) summer heat – it’s the closest thing to heaven. The artists attending Surf n’ INK 2010 are all high-profile world-class artists. Check out the artist list and see for yourself. Complimenting the “real show” (the artists) we have a great list of live bands, music, tattoo workshops, tattoo seminars, art-fusion, contests and so much more. Surf n’ INK 2010 offers an opportunity to see, meet, listen and be part of tattoo culture and lifestyle on a global level. Surf n’ INK 2010 will be the ultimate tattoo experience of the decade. Get ready to feel inspired and be ready to get INKED! For the love and sake of tattoos, Australian surf, and music… You are all welcome!” Now I ask you, is that not the kind of way you’d like to spend a few days this winter? I sure as hell know that it works for me. Surf n’ Ink 2010 runs January 15th, 16th and 17th and boasts tattoo artists from places as diverse as Tahiti, China, Norway and Thailand (to name a few). Unfortunately, I’m stuck here in Rain City, so I hope that all you tattoo artists and tattoo junkies who are attending this event realize exactly how lucky you are. Enjoy! You bastards.
