It just so happens that I’m a bit of a video game fan. I know that I’ve kind of spoke at length on the Tattoo Blog about how great I think that it would be if there were such a thing as a really good, interactive tattoo video game. Well, unfortunately there isn’t a really great tattoo video game out there just yet, but I continue to have a feeling that it won’t be much longer before we do have a mature and challenging game on one of the major game consoles. In the meantime however, if you are desperate to play something that allows you to virtually exist in the tattoo world, you might want to consider giving Tattoo City a try. Tattoo City is an online game that requires no download and which has grown to 2.6 million monthly active users in the past month alone. So take note, major video game manufacturers out there – people are hungry for tattoo video games. Anyway, I’ve read up a little on Tattoo City and though it doesn’t get very technical and the graphics are certainly far from what you could call realistic, the game itself gets a thumbs up for taking the concept of building up your own tattoo studio in a virtual world. You start the game with next to nothing and have to work your way up to the big time, just like in real life. It’s not something that I’m completely interested in playing, but it obviously doesn’t have any trouble attracting those who are interested in playing. Not only that, but the fact that this game exists is encouraging for those of us who are eagerly awaiting the arrival of a heavy duty, real to life tattoo game with amazing graphics. Have at it , my fellow video game geeks. Tags: facebook games , News , Products , tattoo blog , tattoo city video game , tattoo video game , Workforce Related posts on Tattoo Blog: Yikes. Movin’ On Up to Tattoo City
It’s good to know that there are guys like Danny Knight in the tattoo game. In any industry, the people with the most heart and the most passion for their work are the true stars, whether they are appearing on a highly popular reality TV series or working at some tiny studio somewhere in obscurity. Caring about and loving the work that you do transcends all the other bullshit that so often gets in the way. Danny Knight doesn’t appear on any highly popular reality TV series, but the tattoo machines that he builds have. For quite some time, his very own brand of machines were used by some of the guys on the Discovery Channel’s tattoo series Miami Ink. Since 1998, Knight has been building tattoo machines and though it initially started out as a hobby and something of a fun challenge, it has now taken off into a second full time career next to tattooing. Knight owns and operates Cast Iron Tattoos in Orlando, Florida where he specializes in traditional American and Japanese styles, though in truth, he likes to do it all. Not only that, but he’s actually very adept at doing it all, which is pretty damn important if you ask me. Despite having a tattoo shop, a machine shop, a family and some dogs, Danny Knight has also set up his own tattoo convention called The Tried and True Tattoo Expo . Tried and True was made out of a desire to keep things well…tried and true. The concept of the expo came to life when Knight decided that with the rising popularity of the tattoo scene, that too many tattoo expos and conventions were being put on by promoters who didn’t really care about the industry and who were essentially just trying to cash in on something that really meant nothing to them. And hey, seeing that people like Danny Knight are actually still out there, staying true to the world that they love is so much more than a comfort, it’s a genuine inspiration to anyone who cares about the tattoo industry. Hey, not to generalize, but tattoo artists can certainly behave as a responsible and progressive lot. Sure there’s crummy tattoo artists out there who aren’t really doing anything for anyone other than a few crummy flash tattoos now and then, but hey, that’s a very minor percentage of the artists out there. In truth, tattoo artists are continuously working to push the boundaries in everything from their art to the methods in which their art is portrayed and displayed. Enter the Rites of Passage Tattoo and Arts Convention , taking place this 2011 from the 28th to the 30th of January. What truly separates ROP from other tattoo conventions is the method and intent of the entire gathering. Rites of Passage isn’t just about seeing phenomenal tattooists under one roof and hanging out. I mean, it is about that but it’s also about so much more. “The Rites of Passage Festival aims to take you on a journey to lands forgotten and cultures undiscovered to re-explore the real reason people get tattooed in both the modern and ancient world. In doing so, it celebrates not only the creative energy that links us to ourselves and each other as a modern tribe – it enables us to explore how we can reconnect with our natural environment in the same respectful ways as our ancestors, and re-establish the balance our Earth needs for its survival while we go about living our modern lives.” In layman’s terms, this is a festival and not just a tattoo convention. It intends to create a dynamic between the natural environment, artists and the people who appreciate tattoo art. There will be music, public speakers, various types of performers as well as visual artists. The best part about the entire festival however, is that it’s doing its best to ensure that the entire event is 100% organic. By that they mean that the festival will showcase as many organic and eco-friendly products that they can. Organic produce, eco-friendly tattoo products, recycled goods, it’s all going to be a major part of what Rites of Passage is all about. Plus, in addition to all the great stuff that will be found at the festival, it’s nice to know that 100% of the profits from Rites of Passage will go toward buying agricultural land which will then be replanted with virgin rainforest. Not bad at all, right? Oh yeah, one last thing that I forgot to mention: the entire festival takes place in Melbourne, Australia, which means that come January you’ll most likely be itching to get out of the winter weather and hit the gorgeous summer weather that Australia is known for. Plus, Nick Baxter is going to be there – I mean…do you really need any more of a reason to go??? Summer is of course, one of the best times for tattoos. People are showing more skin so there’s more opportunity to check out other people’s art and there’s just something about hot weather that makes people want to get a new tattoo. But while all the real tattooing is going on for us adults, we often forget about the little people out there who love showing off their tattoos in the summer as well – even if these tattoos are not of the permanent variety. Yes, I’m talking about temporary tattoos again. Granted, temporary tattoos are nowhere near as interesting as real tattoos. Sure thing, there’s no argument there at all. However, I figured that surely there are tattooed people out there with children and that this piece of news could be of some use to them. Now then, I don’t know about you, but I can appreciate a decent SpongeBob SquarePants temporary tattoo, especially if that temporary tattoo happens to glow in the dark. For their part, kids love it as well. But if you’re a parent of a child who wants to cover his or her body with SpongeBob glow in the dark temporary tattoos, then you’d better take a look at this post over at Montana With Kids . According to the blog, a mother let her two young boys spend their money on SpongeBob SquarePants glow in the dark temporary tattoos. The boys wore the tattoos for a couple of days, but when the time came to remove them, nasty hives and rashes were left behind in the shape of SpongeBob. Thankfully the kids didn’t require any medical treatment other than an over the counter cortisone cream and anti-histamines, but damn – even that shouldn’t be necessary when all these guys were doing was wearing a tattoo of one of their favourite cartoon characters. We’ve seen a far more uncomfortable and serious burning into flesh from black henna, but black henna isn’t something that kids have as much easy access to as temporary tattoos. So if you’re a parent, you might want to be a little more cautious this summer about the temporary tattoos that your kids stick on to their bodies. You never know what’s in those things. Because it’s summer, the urge for a new tattoo or maybe even that first time tattoo seems to grow exponentially. I guess it’s the weather, the beach, the freedom and happiness that often comes along with the summer season. People want to show some skin and quite often, people want to show off some of the beautiful art that they have tattooed on their bodies. Well, if you happen to be one of the many people out there who are contemplating their first tattoo this summer, you might feel a little overwhelmed with all the information to be found on tattoos and/or getting a tattoo done. If you’re already past the initial first-timer question of Does it hurt?, and have decided that you still want a tattoo regardless of whether or not it does in fact, hurt, then you’ll no doubt have more important questions that you want answered. While I personally can’t answer all your questions – actually, I can answer one: no, the guy you met at 7-11 who says he’ll tattoo you in his basement for a pack of cigarettes and a box of wine isn’t a real tattoo artist and yes, you should stay far, far away from him. Seriously though, if you’re looking for an abundance of information on the vast tattoo world, then it might serve you quite well to pick up The Tattoo Bible, a 164 page reference manual of sorts, from British publisher Jazz Publishing. According to Jazz Publishing’s website : “The Tattoo Bible is the manifestation of erudition assimilated over many years and is the most comprehensive body of work for a prospective tattoo collector to date, providing an insider’s view of the tattoo world to those looking in. Amongst its informative pages, it explores the roads and avenues an individual faces when deciding upon a piece of body art and offers thoughtful insight into every single aspect of this, whilst also providing a complete overview of the many genres available, all exquisitely illustrated with a selection of outstanding tattoo photography.” “Education is paramount when it comes to making decisions that will echo through the hallways of one’s life. The Tattoo Bible provides wisdom and a balanced perspective in a book by which you may live your tattooed life.” Seems like a good place to start. At the very least the book can most likely serve as inspiration for the type of tattoo that you may want to get. It certainly isn’t essential, but it can provide a wealth of information on a life long commitment that far too many people rush into. Summer of Uncertainty
In terms of the extent to which tattooing has branched out as a commercially viable product, fashion isn’t exactly the most recent merchandiser of tattoo inspired art. Anyone who has even the vaguest idea of the tattoo world can easily recognize Ed Hardy’s designs and has been able to do so for years now. And while not everyone agrees on the quality of Hardy’s designs, there is no denying that Hardy’s ability to take tattoo art and transfer that to clothing has in many ways paved the way for others to do the same. With that being said, it also isn’t surprising that later rather than sooner, the high end fashion industry has come along and decided that maybe tattoos aren’t such a bad way of being able to further overcharge people for their stuff. If you’ve ever seen a photo of American fashion designer Marc Jacobs (look right, btw), then you’ll know that the guy’s no stranger to tattoos. After Chanel began selling temporary tattoos last year, the fashion world further warmed to the idea of tattoos and fashion, and Jacobs decided to enlist the help of his personal tattoo artist Scott Campbell, to do some work for him (but not on him). Campbell has just designed a line of tattoo inspired goods for Louis Vuitton, for the first time in the brand’s history. “At most periods of history, the dominant role of luxury brands has been to demonstrate social status — to uphold the cultural structure. However, there are clear signs that we are moving into a new environment, a shadow side, where luxury brands can powerfully demonstrate tribal affiliations.” Incidentally, I don’t know what the hell the above quote is talking about - tribal affiliations? Huh? But at any rate, now there’s a whole line of really, really, really expensive Louis Vuitton stuff that has been designed by a very good tattoo artist. Incase you care.
