Family Ties (and Tattoos)

If you regularly read the Tattoo Blog then you might know that I sometimes like to follow one day’s post up the next day with something similar.  For example, yesterday I wrote about the popularity of food related tattoos.  Today after doing a bit of searching around, I happened to come across yet another food related tattoo article. This time, the article is about Casa Sanchez; a Mexican restaurant in San Francisco’s Mission District.  The restaurant has been in the Sanchez family since the 1920’s, but it wasn’t until 1999 that Ms Sanchez came up with the idea for a promotion in which anyone who was willing to have the restaurant’s logo tattooed on them would receive a free lunch for the rest of their lives.  Many people said that such a promotion was akin to economic suicide and that the Sanchez family would rue the day that they came up with such an idea. Well, today the restaurant is still alive and kicking, although since 1999, the promotion has undergone a slight alteration.  Ms Sanchez didn’t think that anyone would be interested in getting the restaurant’s logo tattooed on their body, but before the year was up, the Sanchez family were so overwhelmed by people wanting to get a tattoo of the restaurant’s sombrero wearing kid riding a giant ear of corn, that the offer was capped at 50 people max.  From then on, interviews were conducted with prospective tattoo enthusiasts to determine who would qualify. “If the potential customer didn’t understand the spirit of the tattoo—becoming an unofficial member of the Sanchez family—and asked too many questions about the meals or the restaurant’s solvency, Ms. Sanchez gently told them, “I don’t think this is going to work out.”‘ The end result was a sort of new addition to the Sanchez family, fifty new additions, to be exact.  Bonded to the Sanchez family and the Casa Sanchez restaurant by their tattoos, these are people who are not just in it for a free meal, but who have come to view the restaurant as something of a home base.  One of those tattooed with the restaurant’s logo - Makena Echeverria – is an unemployed construction worker who takes an eighty minute bus ride twice a week to eat at the restaurant.  For Echeverria, the restaurant and the family atmosphere make a difference. I think we’ve all seen promotions that tie in with tattoos many times before, but this one seems different to me.  This one seems to have a lot of heart and its purpose goes a lot deeper than just getting free food.  It brings people together and creates a bond that, much like the tattoos themselves, will always be there. Meet Bert Krak!

If you happen to be someone who is a big fan of the classic American tattoo style and you’re looking for a tattoo artist who can really pull off that style, then look no further than tattoo artist Bert Krak . Although the classic American tattoo is certainly not new, Krak’s approach injects a new life into the style.  Animals become much more than just ink on flesh; they pulse with energy, often with a menacing shine to their features.  There’s an abundance of colour and heft throughout his work, retaining the innocence of the storybook-like images that he works with, while adding just the right twist of the macabre.    Six years ago, Krak began tattooing full time, after apprenticing for two years at Rock-A-Billy Tattoo in Lauderhill, Florida.  These days Krak has set himself and his family up in Queens, New York, working for Top Shelf Tattooing.  As with many other tattoo artists, Krak’s artistic impulses lead him beyond tattoo work into the mediums of painting and fashion.  He recently designed this hat for the San Francisco based artist collective, 1333 Minna .   Bert Krak tattoos by appointment or walk in and does work beyond the classic American style.  Although, with a classic American tattoo style as well defined as his, it’s pretty hard to resist. Meet Victor Policheri!

According to Victor Policheri’s MySpace page , he can’t seem to stay in one place.  After spending some time trying to pin point Victor’s current exact location in the world, I’d have to say that the MySpace claim is for the most part, correct.  Victor Policheri really can’t seem to stay in one place. I don’t think that any single person can say for certain where a tattoo artist gains the necessary motivations, inspirations and energy which ultimately come to earmark their work.  Yet I do feel that travel and the experience of different and new cultures has an extraordinary ability to alter not just a person’s artistic inclinations, but also their personal outlook, behaviour, taste and a whole heaping mass of other characteristics related to life. Victor Policheri also seems to feel this way.  Growing up in the wintery chill of Minnesota, Policheri decided at the age of 19 that tattooing was something that he wanted to pursue.  He took out a college loan and instead of buying books, paying for tuitions and that sort of thing, he bought tattoo equipment.  Armed with this new equipment, Victor didn’t go the traditional tattoo route of an apprenticeship, instead he slowly taught himself, eventually setting out on his trusty motorcycle for greener pastures in 1996.  He travelled throughout America, briefly stopping in Olympia, Washington before moving on to Seattle.  Seattle seemed to be a good match for Policheri, and he worked as something of a freelance tattoo artist, doing construction and odd jobs to fully round out his income.  As time passed, Victor made close friends amongst Seattle’s tattoo community and begin to get full time work. The work that Policheri had been doing as a freelance tattoo artist did have its own benefits, one of which was that Victor was forced to work without transfer machines, forcing him to draw all the work he did on to the flesh freehand.  To this day, Victor credits this process for his ability to render his art more naturally to the flesh. In the last few years, Policheri has really taken off on a global scale.  He currently lives in Barcelona, Spain, but it seems to me that he could just about be anywhere.  His website shows photos and gives information about his travels, his time spent in gorgeous South East Asia, Berlin, Amsterdam, Sweden, Finland.  He travels and learns and tattoos, meets new people and manages to continuously create some very fine tattoo work.  Take the time to scroll through his gallery and I guarantee you’ll see more than a few pieces that really catch your eye.  His work carries both dark and bold characteristics and often manages to incorporate a Gothic sense of tone.  But to simply describe Policheri’s work in these terms is an injustice.  There is much going on in both his life and his work and for the time being, it seems that we’ll just have to wait until he resurfaces again from his latest adventure to spill some more ink on the big ol’ map of life. Meet Andrea Ottlewski!

While looking around the internet at various tattoo artists, I found a couple of websites that listed tattoo artist Andrea Ottlewski as one of the greatest female tattoo artists currently working.  There’s no doubt that Ottlewski’s tattoo work is gorgeous: vibrant, clean, sharp – everything that you want in a tattoo as well as from a tattoo artist.  The thing is, listing Ottlewski as a great female tattoo artist is too limited.  Andrea Ottlewski is simply a great tattoo artist, period.  Gender has nothing to do with it.  Ottlewski’s abilities put her on par with all of the really special tattoo work that I have seen and when all is said and done, it’s about the art and the artist, not whether they are a male or a female. Still, I do recognize the benefits of Andrea “representing” so to speak, and being a role model for other women out there who are working on their own tattoo careers.  That’s great too, but I think there’s more than enough room here for Ottlewski to be an inspiration to anyone who values superb tattoo work. Andrea Ottlewski grew up in what is in my opinion, one of the greatest cities in the world: Berlin, Germany. Berlin is a city brimming with talented, original and unique artists in numerous mediums.  Growing up there undoubtedly had an effect on Andrea’s work, if not her artistic mentality.  Soon enough however, the United States called.  Andrea had a dream to work in San Francisco, California, and so in 1994 she left Germany for San Francisco, where she found work at a tattoo shop called Erno Tattoo. In 2000, after a move to San Rafael, California, Ottlewski took over ownership of her very own tattoo studio, called Area 51.  The extra work and pressure of owning a tattoo studio soon began to take its toll, and Ottlewski eventually decided that she didn’t want the management aspects of a tattoo studio taking away from her time to draw, paint and create.  She ended up selling the shop and later settling down in Seattle, Washington, with a full time gig tattooing at Seattle’s Slave to the Needle . Ottlewski’s work goes from Bettie Page to the Buddha to Super Mario, and no matter what it is that she’s tattooing, quality remains a constant.  I’m very glad that Andrea works in Seattle because that’s not too far away from where I am.  I’ll definitely be stopping by Slave to the Needle in the near future.  If you’re also interested in getting work done by Andrea Ottlewski, you can get in touch with her at: 206.789.2618 or, you can email at slavetotheneedle@comcast.net .
